Book Review: Count Me In by Mikal Dawn

“It was a freak of nature, flying. Unless you were a bird. If God had wanted people to fly, He would have created them with wings, and the last time she checked, feathers weren’t growing out of her back.”

From the Publisher:

“Allegra Spencer has been living a careful life. Her safe job as an accountant is bookended by going to church and the gym. Okay, sometimes the gym. Fine. She goes to church. And the coffee shop. She avoids risk at all cost, preferring to stay safe in her cozy condo. Until her accounting firm goes belly up and she’s out of a job.

Tyler Hawk had a glorious career as a star NFL tight end. He retired on a high note and now lives a second dream of owning his own business and leading others on extreme outdoor adventures. But he needs help with his books—and his heart. When Allegra takes the job, sparks fly.

It’s a case of safety zone versus danger zone, and in their minds, never the two shall meet.”

My Review:

Gather ’round, readers. It’s story time.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a Facebook group far far away, I met Mikal when she was just plotting out this story. She brainstormed for character names and asked for opinions on her work-in-progress, while lo’ and behold I sat waiting for her story to come to fruition. Many nights, I slumbered near my computer, awaiting the Facebook updates that progress has been made. I watched the word counts increase over time as I constantly refreshed my browser. Then, alas, the book was off to the editor whom I was conniving to befriend in order to get my hands on an early copy. Unfortunately, I had to wait for it to be sent to the press and onto my Kindle for me to delve into. I relished in a life of Kit Kat lattes, attractive retired Seahawks football players, death-defying adventures, humor, and wit. Then, the time had come when darkness set upon my world. The final pages were nearing my fingertips and I cried out in agony when I thumbed past the last of the pages and found a cliffhanger. Why must life be so cruel? I turned to Goodreads, searching for comfort when I saw it: “An Emerald City Romance #1” A series! A glimmer of hope shining in the darkness! But. . . I have to wait. . . I blubbered out a request for a Kit Kat latte to my empty surroundings and faded into my pillows and blankets, letting them envelop me as I wallowed in self-pity.

Okaaay. . .

I was a bit dramatic with my storytelling, I’ll accept that.

I was a theatre kid, what can I say?

In all reality, I adored this debut novel! It was lighthearted and hilarious–so many funny moments that made me laugh out loud. The character names are absolutely amazing: Allegra, Story, Caprice–all so quirky and intriguing just like their book. As for Allegra, I could relate to her on a personal level! She is filled with personality and stubbornness that I truly enjoyed and she has such a tender-hearted disposition that I couldn’t help but be drawn to her character.

I also loved the adventure aspect to it. Every single daring adventure scene made me feel like I was experiencing it along with the characters which created such a thrilling reading experience.

I’m so excited to dive more into these characters’ lives and their stories!
